the songs we sing

i can’t remember how young bbl was when i made up the first song. really young. i have been singing it to him every night. every single night of his life since then.

it goes like this.

little baby, it’s time for bed.
little baby, lay down your head.
you came to earth so very small,
our biggest miracle of all.

little baby, it’s time for bed.
little baby, lay down your head.
you’re safe at home with me tonight.
sweet dreams be yours ’til morning light.

little baby, lay down your head.
it’s time for bed.

the other song i started singing when bbl was upset. i sing it as one of my efforts to help him calm down.

calm down, sweet baby.
calm down, and don’t you cry.
calm down, my little one.
i am here.

sometimes i replace “don’t you cry” with “go to sleep.” sometimes it works. sometimes it doesn’t. all the time, it makes me feel better.

my husband made up a song that he sings when he puts bbl down for a nap.

nap time, nap time, time to go to sleep.
bum bum bum
nap time, nap time, time to go to sleep.
bum bum bum
go to sleep, go to sleep.
nap time, nap time.
time to go to sleep.
bum bum bum

when i sing it, i add another “go to sleep, go to sleep” before the last “time to go to sleep.” i assume that bbl prefers his dad’s version because when i am putting him down for a nap, he is usually asking for his dad to do it instead.

my mom asked me the other day if i’m writing stuff down. you know, what he’s been saying lately. how fast he’s learning.

i haven’t been. i should. i will.

i started with these songs. i think they’re worth remembering.

don’t steal ’em since i know you want to. they’re copyrighted and all that.
