ode to a brother on his birthday

we fought like cats and dogs when we were young

about dumb stuff that didn’t matter much.

we hadn’t learned quite yet to hold our tongues,

but still he saved me from unwanted touch.

today we get along and it’s not just

because we live apart and hardly speak.

no, we have seen each other overcome

hard things that might make someone weaker bust.

he loves me, i love him. i’d like to sneak

up north to canada and be his chum.
